Notes From Instructional Coaching

It is not better teaching unless it's better for kids.

The job of a teacher is to cause thinking.

Time is precious plan accordingly.

Teachers deserve a year's worth of growth in their own development.

If you are standing still, you are falling behind.

Reading study of 4th graders reading time:
      4,469 minutes observed
How many minutes were spent teaching reading comprehension?

Activating Prior Knowledge - Which one is better for a lesson on the Boston Tea Party?
What do you know about the Boston Tea Party?
Have you ever been treated unfairly?

Without a quality Before (activate prior knowledge) the During (teaching new concept) is much more difficult.

NC Standard 4 - Teachers Facilitate Learning For Their Students
"Teachers understand how students think and learn."
"Teachers plan instruction appropriate for their students."

Do you do a Review Day?
     How is set up?
     Whole group?
How does that help the students who already understand the concept?
How does that assist in the learning of students who have not mastered the concept?

How can you help your EC and ESL students continue their learning?
Send home tests, quizzes and allow them to redo the incorrect answers, giving them 1/2 credit for        each one new correct answer.  This helps students' self esteem, it's a growth mindset.  An original        test score of a 50 could then become a 75, with the students doing more work and learning.

When a lesson doesn't work or falls short of hitting the mark .... is it by accident or design?
Most of the time it is because of the design.

Instructional Designs are:
      deliberate and intentional
      justifiable
      toward a goal or outcome
      decision making process
grounded in learning theory toward a goal or outcome
decision making process, choosing from among possibilities, not just using last year's lesson plan
accounts for students involved/targeted  - takes into account what they need as learners
can be judged by results, of the EQ, not EOGs
